Protest song for the commerce-weary, politics-weary, I've-had-enough world.

OVERDEVELOPED NATION: Lyrics
Words and Music by Matthew Waya Wolfe
Performed by Waya (wah-YAH)

We’re an overdeveloped nation
On the verge of expiration
And something’s gotta give --
We’re an overdeveloped nation
With a date for annihilation
Is this anyway to live?

We’re addicted to the oil
An’ to money we’re so loyal
For credit scores we doth toil.
Credit card slaves march to work each day
Where CEOs and lawyers and politicians prey
On their very souls.
No time to think. No time to care;
The TV’s got us locked in its ugly stare
To inherit the meek
Buy more junk, let’s make a deal;
Everything you own is something to steal.
So bleed for the creed of greed.
Buy this; buy that; we gotta have it all
Buy it with plastic at the landfill mall.
It’s a foggy plastic breakdown.

We’re an overdeveloped nation
Headed for damnation
And we haven’t got a clue

Rich Folks; poor folks. And no folks in between.
That’s their answer; it’s the rich man’s scheme.
Corporate America really knocks me out
With all the big lies they spew & spout,
So those Dicks will get richer.
An’ when they die they want the biggest damn car
But up in heaven they’ll never get far
No road in them clouds --
Grandma can’t afford her meds anymore
‘cause Phiz-a-cure’s in bed with the feds for sure
Watch your bottom line granny.
Obesity’s now the big disease
Eatin’ processed chicken parts at Mickey D’s
What the cluck is happening to me?

This overdeveloped nation
Our overdeveloped nation
This overdeveloped nation
Is killing me.

We’re an overdeveloped nation
In the need of reformation
And it’s time for self-examination.

Suicide tourism’s all the rage
See a glacier before it melts
and disengage -- from reality
Being green is easy if you’re into conservation
But we drive 90 an hour with no hesitation
Cause we all need our high-speed vacation
We are -- an overdeveloped nation.
Freeways; toll roads, parking lots,
Sit behind a wreck and watch the bloody spots clot.
But random acts of violence hit everyday
No one dies in peace anymore, anyway
We are -- an overdeveloped nation.
And it’s time for a change

When the polar bears drown in the deep dead sea,
When we burn the jungles down for our gluttony,
When the children starve cause our leaders disagree,
We don’t have to worry ‘cause global warning’ll
sweat off all our sins.

We’re an overdeveloped nation
Looking down on God’s creation
With self-righteous indignation.

Don’t judge me or I’ll just judge you
Like all the politicians and preachers do
With their little molds to shape us like silly goo.
Schools snare our children like giant squids,
Squeeze the creativity from all our kids,
To train them for a life in cubicle hell.
And if your mind ain’t up for sale,
The state’ll find a way to toss ya into jail,
‘cause you don’t plug into the program.
And that’s because they’re afraid of idealism, tribalism,
socialism, multiculturalism, peace-ism, tree-ism,
you and me-ism,
And any ism that isn’t their-ism,
‘cause we want the whole damned world
to be just. Like. Us!

It’s time for a change!

‘cause

This overdeveloped nation
Our overdeveloped nation
My overdeveloped nation
Is killing me.

This recording was made on vintage, analog equipment dating to the 1970s and early 80s and converted to a digital format using a 6-year-old computer and the cheapest software I could buy. No major corporation made any significant profits from this recording.

A portion of each sale of OverDeveloped Nation will be donated to organizations related to the issues described in the song/poem.

Waya would like to thank the following: Marlene & Clark Wolfe and Curtis & Verna Akers for instilling the values that lead me to the independence and values which brought me to the conclusion that we do, in fact, live in an Over Developed Nation; Beverly Delidow for support during difficult times, for technical guidance, and for burping on cue; the ODN Singers: James Horsley, Abigail Langham, Melissa Shepherd, and Daniel Miller for their great work getting what I heard in my head down on tape; and the Guyandotte Poets for their encouragement, particularly Andi Feckete, Ron Houchin, John & Llewellyn McKernan, and
Art Stringer.
